Safe Toys for Pets

Keeping your pets safe this holiday season also means being careful when buying their toys.

Many owners want to include furry family members in the gift-giving spirit during the holidays. Toys can be an important part of your pet’s life, providing entertainment, comfort and exercise. However, from a veterinarian’s point of view no toy is 100% safe. Hard toys can lead to broken teeth and soft toys can be ripped apart and swallowed. Many chew toys are designed to be durable but are not indestructible. Be sure to examine any toy for small pieces, buttons, string or other small objects, that could be chewed off and swallowed. Additionally, be sure to dispose of any toys that are starting to wear out. When it comes to gift-giving, your veterinarian will have specific recommendations for your pet and may stock appropriate toys from which to choose. Be sure to check with your veterinarian if you have questions about the toys you would like to gift your dog or cat.
