Collaborative Program to Boost Veterinary Services in Northern Ontario

In 2022, a joint proposal by the University of Guelph and Lakehead University was put forward to address the urgent need for veterinary services in northern and rural Ontario through the proposed Collaborative Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in Rural and Northern Community Practice Program. The Humane Society knew all too well the stressors that were impacting the veterinary industry, the animal welfare industry and, of course, pet owners. We were thrilled to pen a letter in support of this creative and collaborative initiative.

We recently received an update from the Office of the President at Lakehead University, informing us of their success. The Ontario government has committed to supporting and funding the proposed program, producing an additional 20 veterinarians each year once the program is up and running. This program will not only support the large animal community but household pets as well, in Northern, rural, and Indigenous communities across Ontario.

We understand that there was tremendous support for this initiative, and rightfully so! We’re excited for our friends at the University of Guelph and Lakehead University as they begin this exciting new program. Please join us in extending our congratulations!
