Adoption Process

Interested in adopting a pet? This page outlines many of the important items you need to consider when adopting. We encourage you to read through everything, and of course, contact us if you have any questions prior to starting the adoption process.

On Wednesday, July 10th, we are hosting a walk-in adopt-a-thon! Online applications are currently on hold and we will only be accepting in-person applications during the event. Come in and find your purrfect match!

We can't wait to introduce you to your new best friend!

Thank you for choosing to adopt! Adoption positively impacts the lives of both our pets and adopters, and it’s an incredible journey that we can’t wait to start with you. Please know that we’re not only here to introduce you to your new best friend, but also to support you in the adoption process and transition.

Please Note:

Adoptions are by appointment, however we do our best to facilitate walk-ins where possible.

Adoption FAQ

Here are a few important things to know about adopting from the Humane Society:

The Steps to Adopt

You can view all of their information, bio, and pictures to determine who might be a match for you or your family.

Step 3: Wait to be contacted

One of our adoption counsellors will then get in touch with you within 24 hours to arrange a phone interview. Only those selected will be contacted for a phone interview.

Step 4: An Appointment Will be Arranged

If it looks to be a match, our adoption counsellors will arrange an appointment time for you to meet the pet.

Step 5: Complete your Pre-Arranged Appointment

You will have the opportunity to spend quality time with the pet, get to know their personality, and discuss any questions or concerns you may have with our adoption counsellor.

Step 6: If it's a Match - Take Your Pet Home!

Please come prepared to take your new family member home - collar and leash for dogs, carrier for cats (or you can opt for a cardboard carrier), or appropriate carrier for small animals.

The Value of Adopting

Adoption fees

Our adoption fees take into consideration the value of adoption when all of a pet's routine medical costs are included. In most cases, the cost of adoption does not cover the costs that are incurred for an animal. We proudly fundraise to help offset the costs and to ensure that our animals get a second chance at life.

Vet Services

Within the last decade, we have opened a companion animal hospital in our Kitchener centre and a satellite hospital in our Stratford centre. While they focus on the health and wellness of the homeless pets we have coming through our doors, they also provide a number of public facing programs. Today we offer a variety of services including spay/neuter, rabies vaccination, microchipping, and veterinary outreach aimed at keeping people and pets together.
