Junior Vets in Training (Ages 7-10)

Jr. Vets in Training (JR. VIT) is a club offered to kids aged 7-10 who want to learn more about animals through hands on activities and learning!

Dates: 
KITCHENER: Mondays, September 16th - October 28th (1 week break for Thanksgiving)
STARTFORD: Wednesdays, September 18th - October 23rd 
Time: 6-8pm 
Cost: $300 
Session length: 6 weeks 
Taught By: one of our staff veterinarians and Veterinary technitians
Take homes: Their very own scrub top, just like the vet has!

What can JR. VIT’s expect to learn?

  • How to care for shelter animals
  • Basic pet anatomy, how to take animal vitals and common behaviours
  • How to spot a dangerous vs a safe animal
  • Why grooming is important
  • How to choose the right pet for your family when adopting
  • Responsible pet ownership
  • And perform teddy bear surgery!

This club is a gateway into our very popular Vets in Training Program. Each week is a 2 hour in class lesson, just like school, so this program is best suited for children who love to learn.Spots will fill quickly, so get your animal lover signed up ASAP!

Vets in Training (Ages 10-14)

The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth is excited to host another Vets in Training session for children aspiring to be a vet or work with animals in the future. Vets in Training is a 3-tier program (JR VIT, VIT, and SR VIT). These workshops will give children hands-on experience with animals and exclusive access to our on-site animal hospital.

What can VITs expect to learn?

  • Basic anatomy
  • Perform physical exams
  • Nutrition and grooming
  • Breed specific diseases
  • Perform simulated surgery – learn to suture
  • And more!

Each session is lesson focused and lessons are conducted in a classroom setting, so VIT is best suited for children who love to learn. The club is restricted to 15 children so participants can get up close and experience hands-on practice.

Senior Vets in Training (14+)

The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth is excited to host SR Vets in Training (Sr VIT), a program for youth aspiring to be a vet or to work with animals in the future. These workshops will give youth hands-on experience with animals and exclusive access to our on-site animal hospital.

Session length: 6 weeks

What can Sr VIT’s expect to learn?

  • Anatomy
  • Physical Exams and animal behaviour
  • Small Mammal unique requirements, exams
  • How to hospitalize a patient
  • Diagnostics
  • Disease prevention and nutrition
  • Hospitalization (meds, bandaging, catheter)
  • Catheter placement
  • Suturing in a simulated environment

SR Vets in Training is designed for youth ages 14+. The club is restricted to 15 participants so that students can get up close and experience hands-on practice.

Students will work with KWSPHS veterinarians on a weekly basis to help develop their veterinary passion, skills and knowledge.
